Emily Tschiffely received her early dance training from the Washington School of Ballet and the Dance Theater of Harlem Residency at the Kennedy Center (1994) in her hometown of Washington, D.C. She holds a high school diploma and Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the North Carolina School of the Arts, where she concentrated on modern and ballet techniques. Emily completed her Master of Fine Arts degree at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, where she explored dance and acting performance, choreography and production. Her dances have been seen in New York City at the Food for Thought Series at St. Mark’s Church: Dancespace Project, Carmine’s Gym, the Context Theater, One Arm Red, the 92nd Street Y, the Second Avenue Dance Company, the West End Theater, and Ur. As well, her work has been seen in many spaces, including outdoor gardens, in Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Virginia. She has enjoyed residencies at the Yard (a summer arts colony on Martha’s Vineyard) as both a dancer and a choreographer. Emily has performed for many wonderful artists including Patricia Nanon, Linda Tarnay, Kay Cummings, Mira Kingsley, Gus Solomons jr., Karla Wolfangle and Heather Olson and spent five years as a principal dancer with David Parker and the Bang Group (2003-2008), a modern dance company based in New York City that tours throughout the United States and Europe. Mr. Parker choreographed two original solos for Emily, that were a popular part of The Bang Group repertory throughout her tenure with the company. Emily has taught ballet, pointe, modern, partnering, jazz, lyrical, and hip hop dance techniques to beginner through advanced levels of children and adults as well as dance composition, improvisation, performance skills and yoga. Her experience as a rehearsal director for her own choreography and that of David Parker’s has included work at the Juilliard School (2007), Barnard College (2006), the Boston Ballet Summer Program (2007-2008), and the Summer Stages Dance Festival (2003-2008.) Emily has been a passionate arts advocate for many years, working as a grant writer, curator, producer, and grant panelist in the fields of dance and theatre. She has extensive administrative experience, including university financial aid and alumni offices, a private label menswear design company, and an online retailer of handmade artisan goods. She also spent one year as executive support staff for a global private equity firm in New York City. Emily has been on the artistic faculty of The Fredricksburg Theater Company (VA), The Lost Colony (NC), The Yard (MA), Summer Stages Dance (MA), The Young Dancemakers Company (NY), The Janice Wyatt Summer Arts Institute (MS), the Fashion Institute of Technology (NY), and New York University, among many other institutions. During the 2008-2009 school year, she served as an Assistant Professor of Dance within the School of Creative and Performing Arts at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. There she taught a full course load of dance techniques, choreographed multiple student works, and coached the university’s dance line, The NSU Demon Dazzlers.
